Garden Salsa is a popular hybrid hot pepper (Capsicum annuum) specifically bred for making fresh Mexican salsas, picante sauces, and other flavorful dishes. This high-yielding variety produces an abundance of long, slender, smooth peppers that grow 8-9 inches long and about 1 inch wide. They can be harvested at that stage, they start out glossy green with a milder flavor, or allowed to ripen to bright red for added sweetness and slightly more heat. With a medium heat level of around 3,000-5,000 Scoville Heat Units (similar to a mild jalapeño), it offers great pepper taste without overwhelming spiciness. Plants are vigorous, disease-resistant (including TMV), and productive, typically reaching 24-36 inches tall. Maturity is about 73 days from transplant.

Garden Salsa peppers thrive in warm conditions and are easy to grow for both beginners and experienced gardeners. Harden off seedlings gradually over 7-10 days by exposing them to outdoor conditions starting with short shaded periods.

For transplanting, wait until after the last frost when soil temperatures are consistently above 60°F. Choose a sunny spot with at least 8-10 hours of direct sunlight daily. Space plants 18-24 inches apart in rows 24-36 inches apart (or use containers at least 5 gallons for patio growing). Amend soil with compost or vegetable garden soil for good drainage and fertility—peppers prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Dig holes deep enough to set the root ball level with the soil surface (avoid burying stems deeply like tomatoes to prevent rot). Water thoroughly after planting.

Care instructions: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged—about 1 inch of water per week, more in hot, dry summers. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks with a balanced vegetable fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) or one higher in potassium/phosphorus for fruiting. Stake or cage taller plants if needed for support under heavy yields. Watch for pests like aphids or pepper maggots, and ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Harvest regularly by snipping peppers with scissors to encourage more production—they can be picked green or red.

This variety is perfect for home gardens, producing huge yields ideal for fresh salsa, roasting, freezing, or drying.
